Don' take offense on Valentine's Day if that special someone says, "You're Mahatma Gadhi" ot "You're cellophane." Or even "You're turkey dinner." It's likely a quote from the classic 1934 love song, "You're the Top"..."You're the Top" tops the stack of new books of speical inerest for Valentine's Day.
If you're looking for a last minute gift, here are some other book suggestions:
Cartoonists view love in "The New Yorker Book of True Love Cartoons" (Knopf, 112 pages, $20). James Thurber, Edward Koren and Roz Chast are among the contributors to this collection of 100 cartoons about love lost, gained, and in various stages in between. Mrs. Leopard tells a lazing hubby: "I'm not asking you to change your spots. I'm just asking you to take out the garbage." And as Narcissus stares into a reflecting pool, a female admirer naively asks, "Is there someone else?"
...And you can write your own love book with "The Book of Us" (Hyperion, 160 pages, $14.95) by David and Kate Marshall. This hardcover journal invites you to fill in the blanks on its 150 pages, with headings such as "This is how I remember the first time we met..." Other pages evoke recollections about dating, proposing, having a family and looking back on life together.
